R.I.P George Carlin

Author: justsimplyholly  /  Category: Holly, My opinion

As I’m sure you’ve read already, the comedy world lost one of it’s best yesterday. I won’t sit here and say that I’m the worlds biggest Carlin fan, but I will say that the few times I’ve seen one of his shows (all of which were on TV), he made me laugh!

George was not a comedian who sugar coated things, he simply told it how it was! He was one of those one of a kind people that you just don’t come across very often and will truly be missed! So Rest In Peace George!

In case you’ve not seen it, here is a YouTube clip of what I think is one of his best acts! It’s long (over 10 minutes) and filled with lots of words small kids shouldn’t hear, but it’s George at his best!

The plight of the common man

Author: justsimplyholly  /  Category: Finances, Investments, My opinion

It saddens me to see the path our country is taking. I seen example after example of how bad our economy is during my recent road trip. Gas prices are ridiculous! When we left NW Ohio, the average price of a gallon of gas was $4.09. As soon as we crossed into Indiana it dropped to around $3.89. For most of the rest of the trip the average price for a gallon of gas ran between $3.79 and $3.95, with one small station outside of Las Vegas advertising the lowest price we seen of $3.59. It wasn’t until we got into California that gas prices went back up over the $4.00 a gallon price.

Throughout many of the areas that we drove we noticed business after business that was closed and boarded up. Some areas seemed to flourish while others seemed to be virtual ghost towns with the majority of businesses no longer open.

I received a funny email from a friend the other day that included several funny cartoons about gas prices. One cartoon showed a man offering an arm with the person behind the counter saying “I’ll need your left leg too”, another showed a couple with a baby sitting at a desk and the man behind the desk was saying something like “And you have proof that this is your first born”. As cute as these cartoons were, they do somewhat reflect what the common person is going through right now.

Thousands upon thousands of families are struggling to make ends meet, and are often having to decide which bill to juggle until the next pay day. Many struggle to survive from paycheck to paycheck and don’t have the benefit of financial security from good investments through a futures broker. It’s sad to see the daily news stories about the unemployment rates going higher and higher, which go hand in hand with higher foreclosure rates and higher homeless rates. Yet our government continues to deny that this country is in a recession. What is it going to take to make them open their eyes and wake up?

HOW does he have an advantage?

Author: justsimplyholly  /  Category: Holly, My opinion, Sports

You know, I get so tired of hearing people say things like “That’s not fair” or “Why does he/she get to do that if I can’t”. But something I seen on the news and then found online just now just tops the cake, in my opinion!

I was sitting here watching The Today Show and Matt was interviewing a young man, named Oscar Pistorius, from Africa who is a double amputee. You can read his entire Wikipedia page HERE, but I’ll give you a brief synopsis into this young mans life.

Oscar was born without fibula’s in both of his legs. At the age 11 both of his legs were amputated between the knee and ankle. He has spent his entire life overcoming obstacle after obstacle. He played several sports in high school, including rugby, water polo and tennis, but after a serious knee injury while playing rugby he was introduced to running and, to quote, “has never looked back”.

Oscar has participated in the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens where he won the Mens 200 meter T44 with a time of 21.97 seconds and setting a world record. His motto is “You’re not disabled by the disabilities you have, you are able by the abilities you have”, which just shows how determined this young man is to not let his disability hold him back from his life’s goal, which is to participate in the Olymipcs. But this is where the title to this post comes in.

In January of this year (2008) the International Association of Althetics Federations (IAAF) ruled that Oscar is ineligible for competitions because his prosthetic legs that he uses for running give him an unfair advantage over runners with real legs. They based this decision on an amendment they added to their competition rules in 2007 after Oscar took part in his first able bodied competition. The amendment bans the use of “any technical device that incorporates springs, wheels or any other element that provides a user with an advantage over another athlete not using such a device”, and claims that the amendment was not specifically aimed at Oscar.

However, just a few days ago, on May 16, 2008, The Court of Arbitration for Sport reversed that decision, stating ” that the IAAF had not provided sufficient evidence to prove that Pistorius’s prostheses give him an advantage over able-bodied athletes”, thus clearing the way for Oscar to at least try and qualify for the South African Olympic Team. But with the time frame, it’s going to be a heck of a challenge and Oscar is saying that the 2012 Olympics in London are probably more realistic at this point.

But my question is this, and no, I do not truly understand the sport of running. How do the artificial legs that Oscar uses for running give him an advantage over able bodied runners with two natural legs? If you look at his times for events in the Paralympics that he has won medals for and compart them with times for the same events in the Olympics for the medal winners, his times are measurably slower. If they were way faster, then I could see where people might say he has an advantage. I do also understand that this is an area that has yet to be dealt with as far as the Olympics go. But it just feels like a blatant form of discrimination to me, especially when you take into account that the IAAF amended the rule shortly after Oscar’s first able bodied competition!

If you would like to read more about Oscar, here is a link to the Google Search I did. He is an AMAZING young man and when his life’s dream comes true, you can bet that I will have my TV tuned in and rooting him on! GOOD LUCK OSCAR!!!!

So on to happier things

Author: justsimplyholly  /  Category: Blogging, Holly, My opinion

Yes, my feathers do get a bit “ruffled” over the things that go on in our country. But you know, what? There are so many more things in life that make me happy and don’t ruffle my feathers, so lets talk about some of those things instead!

I consider myself to be a very blessed person. I haven’t had the easiest of lives and I’ve mad some not so good choices over the years, but even through the bad times, I always manage to see the good things.

Over the last several years, one of the things that has enabled me to keep a somewhat “sane” balance to my life is blogging. I still have the very first blog I ever created, and I often go back to it looking at how much life has changed over the years. I’ve met some amazing people because of blogging and I even reconnected with a very special friend because of her blog being featured on the local news one night!

Whether I’m down and out or flying high, I know that I can always turn to my blogs to get me through the day! Because of problems with my hands it’s nearly impossible for me to write in a journal, but typing is something I can do, so I view my blogs as my online journals, a place where I can talk about some of the amazing things that go on in my life as well as the things that make me want to give up. And when I write a post about wanting to give up I always manage to get a comment from at least one of the wonderful bloggers I’ve met online!

Unfortunately, recent news articles have tended to focus on negative things that have happened to bloggers. Some bloggers have actually pushed themselves so hard to be the first to blog a huge breaking story that it has actually caused their death. But you know what? That doesn’t represent me or the many hundreds of bloggers I’ve come across. We blog because it gives us a place to share our stories and because it makes us happy! I can’t count the number of times that I have stopped at someone’s blog and read a post that inspired me or brought me to tears. And there are even more blog posts that I’ve read that have made me realize things in my life that needed to be changed.

Anyway, blogging does make me happy, in more ways than I can count, and here’s a little video about why blogging makes me happy! If you don’t have a blog yet, what’s stopping you?

Gary Dourdan charged with felony drug possession!

Author: justsimplyholly  /  Category: Entertainment, Gossip, My opinion

I’ve been a fan of ALL the CSI shows for many years. I watch the new episodes when I can and catch the reruns of some of them on an almost daily basis. But the original CSI has always been one of my favorites! And I have to tell you that I have been in lust with Warrick Brown since the first time I laid eyes on him! But his recent arrest and felony drug charges disgust me!

Yes, I know the trend among today’s stars lately has been getting into trouble, going into drug rehab, going to court and having their hands slapped, then turning around and repeating their mistakes. But the arrest of Gary Dourdan, a.k.a. Warrick Brown, goes above and beyond what we’ve seen lately. His charges are for felony possession of heroin, cocaine and ecstasy and all I can say is WOW! Why would someone with such an amazing future put themselves into that kind of situation? Yes, famous people are human and they do make the same kinds of mistakes that us “common folk” do, but I don’t even understand why ANYONE would put themselves in a situation like this! Do people honestly NOT realize how badly drugs mess up not only your life, but the lives of your family and friends?

I don’t know, I probably never will understand people or the really dumb choices that they make that eventually ruin their lives!

Protecting the dogs

Author: justsimplyholly  /  Category: Holly, My opinion, Pets

Being a dog owner in the country definitely has perks over being a dog owner in the city! And with as far back from the road that our house is, I rarely have to worry about the dogs heading out to the road when I’m outside with them! One worry we do have, however, is people coming onto the property that don’t know that we have dogs.

Many people post beware of dog signs, but because of the possible liabilities a sign like that could cause, we’ve never wanted to put one up. On top of that, the average beware of dog signs aren’t very nice looking! So when I was given the chance at receiving and reviewing a Dogs In Yard sign, I was THRILLED! I had a choice of a Chocolate Brown, Grass Green or Cobalt Blue sign, and since I basically live in the woods, I decided the Cobalt Blue sign would stand out the best of all the colors! When I received my sign this week, I was so happy! The cobalt blue is a nice bright color and the wording and trim are done in a white color, so it really stands out nicely!

All of the mounting hardware was provided with the sign as well as easy to follow directions. I opted for the wood mount because we didn’t have anything that would could use the cable ties on to secure the sign. I managed to convince my husband to break out his trusty tools after I told him the idea that I had for mounting the sign so we could display it near the front of the driveway. Being the typical guy though, he’s always happy to have a reason to break out the power tools…LOL!

I’m very happy with how my idea for mounting the sign turned out and I’m even happier with my choice of the Cobalt Blue sign! I took a couple of pictures of how it turned out so that I could show you! The first picture is one that I took from the end of the driveway so you could see just how visible the blue sign is!

This next picture is one moving a little closer in from the first one

For the last picture I zoomed in so I could get a clear picture of the sign and how nicely it contrasts with the pine trees behind it!

The sign is just fantastic, and it’s an awesome way to let people know as soon as they pull into that we have dogs. It’s also WAY better looking than those standard beware of dog signs, and it doesn’t open us up to possible liabilities that those signs can!

The DogInYard.com website is such an easy website to get around, and unlike the majority of online retailers, they do not require you to pay first. You simply choose which sign and mounting hardware that you want, fill out the order form and your sign arrives in just a few days. They just ask that you send in your check or money order as quickly as they sent your sign, they don’t accept credit cards, they have a “Good Karma” policy and they don’t charge shipping!

So if you’re looking for a nice looking way to let people know that you have one or more dogs as well as a company that truly believes in putting their customers first, stop by and check out the beautiful signs available from DogInYard.com!

Trying to calm the burn

Author: justsimplyholly  /  Category: Health, Holly, My opinion

Heartburn, that is. I’ve dealt with heartburn/reflux problems since I was pregnant with my son. Because I was pregnant, the doctor couldn’t give me any type of prescription medications for fear of it harming the baby I was carrying. Instead, he gave me a couple of suggestions that could help and I still use them all these years later. One of the best forms of relief that I’ve found is to simply drink enough milk every day and drink a small glass of milk at the onset of heartburn/reflux signs.

The other one, which really works well if I’m experiencing heartburn problems during the night, is using a sleep wedge to slightly elevate my head, which actually helps prevent heartburn. Slightly elevating your head during sleep helps keep the acid in your stomach, where it belongs, and my sleep wedge has proven to be my best friend in battling night time heartburn for many years! If you don’t have access to a sleep wedge, another suggestion is raising the head of your bed by putting bricks under it.

I’ve managed to be able to control my heartburn/reflux problems over the years without using prescription medications, but I do have my doctor check it for me once in a while to make sure that it’s not becoming severe enough to require medications. If you’ve been experiencing heartburn/reflux problems, you might consider trying one of the things that works for me. Heartburn/reflux problems can also be a sign of other, more serious, health problems so be sure to seek advice from your healthcare provider to make sure it’s not something more serious!

Yummy yummy in my tummy!!!

Author: justsimplyholly  /  Category: Food, Holly, My opinion, Reviews

It’s no secret that I like to eat, but the truth is I’m a VERY picky eater! Add to that the fact that I’m a spend thrift who HATES to spend money on anything that isn’t necessary and it makes for interesting situations when hubby and I go grocery shopping. My hubby is your typical “If I want it, I’m going to buy it” type of shopper. It doesn’t matter if it’s over priced or something that we don’t need, he’s going to buy it if he wants it or he thinks it sounds good.

We went grocery shopping last night, it was more of a we “HAD to” situation than a “wanted to”, because we were getting REALLY low on the things that we eat daily. We’re going through the frozen food section of the grocery store and something caught my hubby’s eye. He told me that I’d really want to check it out because he thought it would be something I’d like to eat. When I looked at what he was talking about, I was greeted with this box(click for larger image):

image1.jpg

Now I’ll be the first to admit that bagels and cream cheese are one of my own personal “staple foods”. I have a bagel and cream cheese every morning for breakfast as long as I have them in the house. If I don’t have them in the house, I usually don’t eat breakfast…LOL! So Bagel-fuls REALLY piqued my interest. After checking out the nutrition information
image2.jpg
And the cooking directions
image3.jpg
I decided to see which flavor I wanted to try first
image4.jpg

After careful contemplation I opted for the plain bagel filled with chive cream cheese as well as the cinnamon and brown sugar bagel filled with cinnamon cream cheese. The price kind of bothered me (They were $1.92 for a box of 4, meaning each individual bagel would cost 48 cents), because I knew that I could purchase a package of bagels and a container of cream cheese at a lower cost per bagel. But I decided to go ahead and give them a try because I was sure I’d eventually be able to find coupons for them if I really liked them.

This morning I decided to give the plain bagel with chive flavored cream cheese a try. I wish I’d have read the box when I got home from the store last night because on the back it states that they are better if stored in the refrigerator, and I put them in the freezer since that’s where I had found them at in the store. But that wasn’t a big deal. I opted to put my Bagel-ful in the toaster, and since it was frozen I actually ran it through the toaster cycle 2 times. By doing that I ended up with a bagel that was just a little crusty on the outside, but the cream cheese filling was still just a little frozen. (A “problem” that I wouldn’t have had if I’d have put them in the fridge instead) But it honestly wasn’t a big deal! This is what my Bagel-ful looked like straight out of the toaster:

image5.jpg
And so you could see exactly how the inside of them look, I cut it in half for you
image6.jpg

Overall, I’m VERY impressed with this product! The taste is excellent, the size is actually larger than I thought it would be and I will definitely purchase them again! ESPECIALLY if I can manage to find coupons for them! If I could get the cost per Bagel-ful down to under 40 cents, I’d keep these on my “staples” grocery list! They’re not messy, they’d be something great to take in the car or pack in a school lunch or even toss in your bag for a quick and easy snack!

So, if you’re in the frozen food aisle at your grocery store and happen to see Bagel-fuls and wonder if they’re worth trying, you get a DEFINITE yes from me!

Our four dogs…

Author: justsimplyholly  /  Category: Great Products, My opinion, Pets

As you’ve read here many times, we’re dog owners. Up until a week ago, we had three dogs, but as of last Sunday, we now have four. Our oldest dog (Harley) is getting ready to turn four and the baby (Sage) is just 8 weeks. Other than Harley being a boxer mix and Sage being a boxer, the four dogs have nothing in common breed wise. Let me give you a little info on the dogs themselves.

Harley is a near 4 year old Boxer/German Shepard mix. We adopted Harley from the local animal shelter when he was approximately 7 weeks old. Our next dog, Riley, is a pure bred Labrador who just turned 2 in December. We “think” Willow is a Heeler/Great Dane mix who turned 1 in January, and Sage is an 8 week old Boxer pup.

harley.jpgThis is Harley When we first got Harley, we went “all out” on his food and treats, buying only the best that money could buy. Although the food was good nutritionally, it just did not seem to agree with his system and he had horrible diarhea quite frequently. After taking him to the vet because we were sure he was very ill, we discovered that his top dollar food was known for causing the problems we were having with him. The vet reccomended a few different foods, but also asked that for the next week or so we put him on a simple diet of boiled chicken and rice, since they were easily digested and nutritious. Everything worked out fine with Harley after that, we didn’t have any more problems with him because of his food.

riley.jpgThis is Riley Eight months after we got Harley, we were given Riley from a friend of a friend. Originally, we were only told that Riley was a pure bred Labrador and that the people who had him just couldn’t handle him any longer. Riley was sweet, but not the nicest dog. When we first fed him and Harley at the same time, Riley wolfed down his bowl of food in a matter of seconds then went over and started on Harley’s bowl. When Harley tried to get his food back, Riley growled and bit at him to the point that it scared us. We later found out that his original owners had a pair of breeding boxers and that they had simply put Riley in with the two Boxers and let him fend for himself for food and shelter. It took a couple of weeks and a TON of work, but we finally got Riley to realize there was no need to eat his food fast or eat Harley’s food, that there would be food in his bowl when he needed it.

willow.jpgThis is Willow Willow came to us from my sister who just HAD to have a puppy, but after only three days decided that she no longer wanted her. She tried to give Willow back to the people she had gotten her from, but they refused to take her back. Willow is a MONSTER of a dog size wise, at one year old, she is bigger than both of her older brothers. She’s not heavier, she’s very long and lean. Willow is our “wild child”, she’s the most active one, she LOVES to be outside, no matter what the weather is she’d rather be outside than inside. She is also our “chew anything and everything” dog, meaning even if she has toys, bones and food to chew on, she’d much rather chew up something she really shouldn’t! (i.e. shoes, cameras, furniture)

image10.jpgThen we have Sage Sage is the baby of the family and has proven to be a completely amazing dog in the week that we have had her. She’s VERY good at not having accidents in the house and her big brothers and sister have finally started to acclimate themselves to her, and she to them. We’ve nicknamed her Vicious because she likes to hide under one of the chairs then attack whatever person or dog happens to walk by…LOL!

Over the years we’ve ran into some feeding problems with the older three dogs, especially Harley and Riley. Both have had numerous times where they have thrown up as soon as they’ve eaten as well as bile problems. For the longest time we treated their tummy problems by giving them a few tablespoons of plain yogurt per day. If the problems seemed severe we would make a trip to the vet and would often put one or more dogs on the boiled chicken and rice diet, which would always cure the problem.

Although none of the above solutions are invonvenient, my husband decided that the time had come to look into dog foods better. Our dogs are exclusively fed dry food as we cannot deal with the “smells” that escape when they eat canned foods. So one evening he went online and started researching dog food, looking at every last ingredient as well as the nutritional benefits. After a couple of evenings of doing this, he finally narrowed his “list” of foods down to three and the following weekend we started what we now refer to as the “Food Trials”….LOL!

It took a few weeks to try the three different foods, but of the three, one came through the trial with flying colors! That food ended up being Beneful. Since starting the older three dogs on Beneful we haven’t had a single incident with them throwing up and haven’t had to give them yogurt, nor have we had problems with any of the dogs having diarrhea. Since having such success with feeding the older dogs Beneful, we decided that Sage would be started right off on Beneful. I truly belive that doing so was a great idea because she is gaining weight, we haven’t had any problems with diarrhea with her and she really seems to love the food! And since the older dogs are also eating Beneful, if she happens to sneak to their food bowls it’s not going to shock her system as badly.

No, I’m not being paid to write this! It was something that I felt was important to put out there for other dog owners. I think it’s awesome that I have 4 different dogs and I’ve found one food that they can eat that will meet their nutritional needs and not cause problems with their systems! All four dogs are in DIRE need of a good grooming, yet all four of them have beautiful shiny coats! And the other thing I’ve noticed with the dogs is that they are much more active on the Beneful, which is a plus, especially since Harley is the dog that would much rather curl up in the recliner than spend time outside….LOL!

I love companies that truly stand behind their products!

Author: justsimplyholly  /  Category: Great Products, Holly, My opinion

Many times I talk about being disgruntled or unhappy over a product or service I have received. I decided that I needed to take the time to talk about a company that actually DOES stand behind their products for a change! The company I’m about to tell you about will definitely be getting return service from my family!

The company is Mr. Coffee. Now Mr. Coffee is definitely a world known brand name, but for the most part I have steered clear of their coffee makers because of other peoples experiences with them. But last fall we were in a position where we needed to replace our coffee maker ASAP and didn’t have the $$$ to replace it with the brand we had been using for several years. So we went to our local “carry every product under the sun” store to see what our options were. There were several brands and types of coffee makers to choose from, but we finally decided on this one because it offered us the ability to set the machine up at night and have coffee ready when we woke up.

Other than a few quirky things, we were quite happy with this machine until about a week ago. Out of the middle of no where the illuminated dial that tells the time, length of time the current brew cycle has been on and programmed brew time went on the fritz to the point that it was unreadable. We tried everything we could think of to fix it short of tearing it apart, but no luck. So we just decided that we’d use it as it until we could afford to replace it. One day while I was gone my husband decided to call the company and see if they had any suggestions as to how to fix the problem. The lady on the other end of the phone walked him through a few different things, but the clock still would not work. She then asked my husband for our mailing address, telling him since they couldn’t fix it, the would replace it at no charge to us. The only thing was that the black and red model was out of stock, so she would have to ship us the black and chrome model, if that was OK, which it was!

This was, I believe, late Tuesday afternoon. Within 24 hours he had an email confirmation from the company that also included a tracking number for UPS for us to track the package. Imagine our surprise when we found that it was scheduled to be delivered today (Friday). I’m thrilled to say that the package was delivered on time and that Mr. Coffee actually upgraded the machine we had to this one. I actually like the new one better. It’s basically the same as the old one, only it’s a different shape.

So the Mr. Coffee company gets two thumbs up from this consumer!!
