Covering all your bases

If you know me well, you know that I’m definitely not a “well traveled” person. As a matter of fact, this summer was the first time in over 15 years that I’ve done any significant traveling. For the most part, my travels consist of driving to work, to the kids’ schools, and to family members homes that live less than an hour away. And the flight that I took home from California in June was the first time I had been on an airplane since I was 15 years old. That should explain how little traveling I have done in my lifetime!
So when I heard that there was a such thing as travel insurance, I was totally clueless as to what it exactly was. And if you know me, you know that when I’m clueless about something, I HAVE to find out just exactly what it is! What I found out totally fascinated me!
There are actually several different things that travel insurance can cover, each with it’s own terms and pricing. You can get travel insurance to protect your travel costs, which basically means that if something happens and an emergency or disaster prevents you from going on your trip, the premium will reimburse your costs, usually without a deductible or co-pay.
There is also Travel Health Insurance, which obviously pays medical bills if you were to get sick or injured while traveling, flight accident insurance which pays you or your beneficiary in case a flight accident causes your death, loss of limb(s) or loss of sight and even emergency evacuation insurance that covers the cost of transportation in the case that you get seriously ill or injured and need to be transported to a facility for treatment.
The thing that amazes me the most is that these policies are VERY inexpensive! For instance, if I was going to go on a trip with my husband and children and the cost per person for this trip were $500, I could get a trip protection policy that would cover the four of us for as little as $52. I could get a travel medical policy for the four of us for as little as $92 and I could get a an emergency evacuation policy for as little as $90.
While the chances of us going on a trip where we would actually need any of this type of coverage is little to none, it is nice to know that if I felt I did need something like this, it is available, and at a very reasonable price I might add!
