Still unsure about the cell phone situation…
Oct 25th, 2008 by justsimplyholly
While I have heard that there is still no definitive date for when our current cell phone provider is actually going to stop offering service, I’ve definitely been shopping around so that we don’t end up in a pickle without cell phones. No, we don’t necessarily “live” on our cell phones, but we have come to rely on them. I like knowing that I can get a hold of my hubby if he’s out and about, and I like the fact that if something happens when I’m out in the van, I can call him, or even 9-1-1 if necessary. I also have to admit that I like the fact that I have internet on my phone, it allows me to check my email when I’m out and about, which comes in very handy, especially if I’m waiting for an important email.
This is the first time we have ever had cell phones that weren’t prepaid. I like the flexibility of prepaid cell phones, but I also like knowing that I don’t have to worry about running out of minutes at the worst time possible too, which is what I have with my current plan.
There are SOOOOO many options available when it comes to cell phones though. You can have flip phones, slider phones, touch phones, and even unlocked cell phones if that’s what you’re looking for. Once you choose your phone, then you have to decide what type of services you want. Some providers offer plans that give you everything under the sun, like text messaging, internet access, picture mail and even applications for email programs, music and games.
While I’m totally unsure about what we’re going to do when the time comes for us to have to find new service, I’m always open to your thoughts and opinions! What phones do you all have? Do you like your phone or do you hate your phone? Who do you use for a service provider? Do they do a good job in your opinion, or are they a provider I need to make sure I avoid? I’m looking for all the information I can get right now, and I’ve found one of the best types of information comes from current customers!

Mike and I are with Virgin Mobile, a pre-paid company, and we love them. The phones are nice and inexpensive, and they have a huge variety of plans to choose from. I have a camera phone, which enables me to post pics to my blogs via Flickr or Utterli, Mike just has a basic phone that he only uses for emergencies.
VM makes it very easy to “top-up” (add more minutes) directly from your phone, if you connect it to a PayPal, credit card, or bank account. You can also set it so that it will automatically top-up once your balance gets below a certain level, then you will never run out of minutes when you need them most.
Most of the phones do have internet capability, although I have never tried it myself. They have various plans for that, as well.
We’re not heavy cell phone users, so we can’t really justify the cost of the regular plan. But Virgin Mobile works well for us, it’s very cost-effective for my needs…even when I text to Twitter or photoblog via Flickr or Utterli!
Kat recommended them to me, and she did not steer me wrong!
