An experience I will never forget!
Dec 21st, 2007 by justsimplyholly
I was given the privilege last night to stand outside and make my voice heard by saying “THEY MATTER”! I went to a gathering of people who all want to make a difference and let the homeless population in Toledo, Ohio know that they matter to us and that we are going to stand together as one and make sure that we are heard.
Homelessness in America is out of control. Yes, there are many organizations that offer help to the homeless, but here in Toledo those that are “in charge” of that help are wasting the funding. We lack adequate housing for the homeless and many are still on the streets on these cold winter nights with no blanket and no way to get warm. It brings tears to my eyes because I was so depressed this week about things that are going on with my family financially, worrying about bills and how there would be anything under the tree for the kids Christmas morning. How could I have been so selfish and self centered when there are men, women and children who don’t even have the privilege of having a roof over their heads or a coat or blanket to keep them warm? Last night changed my heart in ways that I cannot explain, nor am I even going to try. It’s not that I was unaware of homelessness, I’ve experienced it personally. But my family was fortunate enough to have shelter to go to while we were homeless, many others aren’t that fortunate. Even if we wouldn’t have had shelter, we were homeless in the summer, so staying warm never would have been an issue for us.
I don’t even know where I am going with this, my thoughts are going a million miles an hour and all I can think of is that there HAS to be something, ANYTHING I can do to help! So, in honor of the ones that matter today’s Christmas song is kind of an emotional one, but it’s one that has been stuck in my head since last night!

I’m only one person, but let the change begin with me! THEY MATTER!!!

What a great post, Holly.
I agree that funds for the homeless are grossly mis-managed. I heard on the news a while back that the lousy little trailers that the government wwas putting Katrina victims into cost so much, that they could have built more than one REAL house for what one trailer cost.
Same thing with programs that put the homeless into motels…for what it costs to out one family into a small motel room, they could put several families into PERMANENT housing.
It makes no sense to me. Things need to change…NOW!
congrats on the pu2b 1000 $ win !
Holly, check the payu2blog blog. You won girl! You won! Merry Christmas girl!
Holly — I know what you’re talking about. The homeless wander the streets of Greenville although there are several places that would give them shelter, food and showers, so many are so mentally ill or alchoholic that they won’t go and then they are subjected to so many abuses it’s a crying shame.
Thank you for caring and trying to help.
Hugs,
Maggie
Congrats on the $1K win!!!!
What a beautiful and extremely inspiring post.
