What are your thoughts on loans?

I’m just wondering what everyone’s thoughts on loans are these days. I know it’s almost impossible to live without them, but do you think that’s part of the problem or do you think it’s a sign of the times and there really is nothing we can do other than live with them?
Many signs point to the fact that people today simply don’t live within their means. They take out loan after loan, whether it’s for a home, a vehicle, home improvements or simply a personal loan for things like vacations and other non essential items. (Not that I think vacations are non essential, because I know how important they are!)
If you do use loans yourself, which do you feel are the best kinds, secured loans or unsecured loans and which do you feel you get the best deals from?
I’m asking because I honestly am completely clueless when it comes to loans. I’ve had 2 car loans in my life, the last being when I was 21, but I honestly didn’t pay attention, I simply signed where they told me to sign and took the keys and left. I’ve never had a personal loan and my husband and I have never had a mortgage. The only thing that I think of is that if I were to take out a loan I’d try to find some place that offers cheap loans because to me, cheaper is “usually” better. But I’m thinking that in the case of loans, that may not always be the best thinking on my part.
